I have included two version of it for you. Watch the video and then scroll down and read the step by step instructions. Instead of just brightening the image which would be our natural instant, let\u2019s create a bit more interest and instead create a spotlight effect.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 2<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-695 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light002.jpg\" alt=\"light002\" width=\"372\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light002.jpg 372w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light002-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Begin by creating a selection with the elliptical marquee tool.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 3<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-696 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light003.jpg\" alt=\"light003\" width=\"375\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light003.jpg 375w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light003-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Choose Select&gt;Transform Selection<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">A bounding box will appear<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">You can now rotate, scale and resize the selection<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Rotate the selection so that the oval falls on the car at an angle as shown<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 4<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-697 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light004.jpg\" alt=\"light004\" width=\"476\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light004.jpg 476w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light004-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Press enter\/return to apply the transformation to the selection<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">We are now going to create a curves adjustment layer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Choose a new adjustment layer from the bottom of the layers palette and select curves<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">You should now see the curves dialog box<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Move the mouse outside the box and into the image, you will notice that it is now an eyedropper tool<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Click and drag and you will see a\u00a0 little circle appear on the diagonal line of the curve. This is the tonal range of the area that you are moving the mouse over. Take a note of where the range is on the curve.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 5<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light005.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-698 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light005.gif\" alt=\"light005\" width=\"290\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Click and drag on the curve. Move the point up and notice that the image will be lightened.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 6<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light006.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-699 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light006.gif\" alt=\"light006\" width=\"206\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">If you look at the layers palette, you will see the adjustment layer with a layer mask applied. Notice that the area of the mask where the selection was present is now white.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Click on the mask to make it active (It should already be active by default)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 7<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-700 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light007.jpg\" alt=\"light007\" width=\"477\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light007.jpg 477w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light007-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">We will now soften the lights edge<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Choose \u00a0 Filter&gt;blur&gt;Gaussian blur<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> <\/em>A better option if you have Photoshop CS6 or newer is to apply a feather to the layer mask. Double click the layer mask to bring up the properties panel. Choose \u00a0a feather amount of the\u00a0mask. This is the best option because you can change the settings at any time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.30.14-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5609\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/Screen-Shot-2014-10-15-at-4.30.14-PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-10-15 at 4.30.14 PM\" width=\"232\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 8<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light008.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-701 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light008.jpg\" alt=\"light008\" width=\"202\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light008.jpg 202w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light008-166x300.jpg 166w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">The spotlight effect should be looking pretty good by now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">The final thing is to remove the effect from the areas that would be in shadow and not illuminated in real life. (such as the air)<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">\u00a0Choose black for the foreground color and select\u00a0 the brush tool<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Click and drag the paintbrush and you will paint away the adjustment from the regions you desire because you are painting on a mask<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">Step 9<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-702 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light009.jpg\" alt=\"light009\" width=\"359\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light009.jpg 359w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/light009-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">And finally we have our result, a soft spotlight on our car. Compare this to the starting image to see the difference.<\/p>\n<p>You can lower the opacity of the adjustment layer if you desire to tone down the effect a little. You can use this technique on all kinds of photos including people.
