This is the beginning file. It contains 3 layers. A background, a jet and the flame for the afterburner, called exhaust.<\/p>\n

We are going to animate the jet from the top of the screen to the bottom. We want to turn off the afterburner, then 1\/2 way through, we will turn on the afterburner and the jet will speed up. This challenge should be enough for you to learn a lot of the animation tools in Photoshop.<\/p>\n

If you need more preceise details on any of the steps, please watch the video. You should watch it anyway to see the animation.<\/p>\n

Step 1.<\/h4>\n

Open the timeline Window>Timeline<\/p>\n

Drag the layers to make them longer, we are dragging them out to the 5 second mark.<\/p>\n

Step 2.<\/h4>\n

With both the Jet and exhaust layers selected, drag to the top of the screen and just off the screen as the starting point for the animation.<\/p>\n

Step 3.<\/h4>\n

Select the jet layer. We will animate this first.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Keyframes are how Photoshop does animations. a\/ You set the first keyframe. b\/ Move the playhead to a different point in time. c\/ Change the object on screen. Photoshop will animate the changes over time, lets see…<\/p>\n

Step 4. Using keyframes<\/h4>\n

Click the arrow to reveal the keyframes<\/p>\n

Click on the stopwatch by Position to set the start point for the jet<\/p>\n

Step 5.<\/h4>\n

Move the playhead to the end of the timeline. This is where you want the animation to end.<\/p>\n

Step 6.<\/h4>\n

Drag the jet to the ending position.<\/p>\n

A keyframe will be generated at the playhead at the end of the timeline.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 7.<\/h4>\n

Press the spacebar of the play button in the timeline to preview the animation. The jet should be moving at a constant speed.<\/p>\n

Step 8.<\/h4>\n

We want to also animate the flame behind the jet.<\/p>\n

Move the playhead to the start position.<\/p>\n

Choose the exhaust layer and click on the stopwatch for position.<\/p>\n

Step 9.<\/h4>\n

Move the playhead to the end of the timeline.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 10.<\/h4>\n

Drag the exhaust into position.<\/p>\n

Play it back and now the jet and the flame should be moving together,<\/p>\n

Step 11. Changing the speed of animations in Photoshop<\/h4>\n

Now we are going to change the speed. We want the jet to start off slowly and then speed up at the end.<\/p>\n

Move the playhead to the middle of the timeline (around 2.5 seconds).<\/p>\n

Click on the diamond between the 2 arrows to the left of the position stopwatch, this adds a keyframe<\/p>\n

Step 12<\/h4>\n

Click on the exhaust layer<\/p>\n

Click the diamond to add a keyframe on the exhaust layer<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 13<\/h4>\n

Click one of the keyframes to select it.<\/p>\n

Hold down shift and click the second keyframe to also select it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 14<\/h4>\n

Drag the keyframe to the right. They will both move together because they are both selected.<\/p>\n

If you playback now, the jet will move slowly, when it hits the second keyframe it will speed up. (It’s explained on the video why it does this)<\/p>\n

Step 15.<\/h4>\n

Now, we want the flame to only appear when the jet speeds up, as the afterburner kicks in.<\/p>\n

Move the playhead back a single frame.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 16<\/h4>\n

In the exhaust layer, turn on the stopwatch for opacity<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 17.<\/h4>\n

Turn the opacity to 0 on the exhaust layer<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 18<\/h4>\n

Move the keyframe forward 1 frame.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 19<\/h4>\n

Set the opacity to 100<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Now the flame will be hidden at the beginning of the animation<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

When it reaches the keyframes and the jet accelerates, the flame will turn on.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 20. Adding a moving shadow<\/h4>\n

Now we need to add a shadow for realism and depth.<\/p>\n

Choose the jet layer<\/p>\n

Click the add a layer style button and choose drop shadow<\/p>\n

Step 21<\/h4>\n

Add the setting as shown here<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The shadow will move with the jet<\/p>\n

Step 22. Changing the shadow over time<\/h4>\n

Let’s change the shadow so that it looks like the jet is climbing when the afterburner is on.<\/p>\n

Move the playhead forward to when the afterburner comes on. (where the speed changes)<\/p>\n

On the jet layer, click the stopwatch to add a keyframe for style.<\/p>\n

Step 23<\/h4>\n

Move the playhead forward a little bit.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Step 24<\/h4>\n

Double click the drop shadow effects to open the effects.<\/p>\n

Change the settings as shown here. Make the shadow softer and more transparent. Drag the shadow further away from the jet. \u00a0(This makes it look like its getting further away.)<\/p>\n

Now when you play it back, the yet will move and the shadow will change over time<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

This makes it look like the jet is climbing. A little bit can go a long way with animation.<\/p>\n

RENDERING THE VIDEO<\/h4>\n

Now we have made the animation, we need to export it, so we can use it.<\/p>\n

Choose Export>Render Video.<\/p>\n

Give it a name<\/p>\n

Choose the location to save the video<\/p>\n

choose the presets and select the best one for your video. Here i used \u00a0youtube 1080 for a letter boxed version that will fit a HD video<\/p>\n
