We will fill foreground elements with darker gray, while the background elements will be filled with lighter shades. Where a plane spans both, such as the arch, we will use a gradient to define its depth. All of these will eventually be blended together into a single layer and used as our depth map. This is similar to how smart-phones create depth with portrait mode. (The depth map can also be uploaded to Facebook to create a 3D photo.)<br \/>\n<\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/facebook-3d-photoshop-guide-turn-layered-photoshop-image-facebook-3d-photo\/\">This tutorial will show you how to do Facebook 3D photos<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>01\/\/ CUT OUT PERSON<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>1. <\/b>Choose the new Object selection tool. (Or any masking tool) Click Select Subject and Photoshop will make a selection of the person. The AI is updated for Photoshop 2020.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. <\/b>Use the Object Selection tool with lasso to refine selection, such as the hole between the legs.<br \/>\nHold <b>Alt\/Option<\/b> to remove from a selection, <b>Shift<\/b> to add to a selection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Press <b>Cmd\/Ctrl+J<\/b> to copy the selected subject to a new layer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37064\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"714\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF1.jpg 714w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF1-600x672.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF1-268x300.jpg 268w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF1-100x112.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>02\/\/ ISOLATE MID-GROUND<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> With the background active, choose the Object Selection tool.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Make a selection around the arch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. <\/b>Also use the Lasso tool to clean up large areas that don\u2019t need edge detections, such as the front sides of the arch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> Continue refining the selection by including traffic lights and street lamps.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also include the cluster of cars to the right. The Object selection tool should make this easy. (They don\u2019t have to be absolute perfect selections for this exercise.)<\/p>\n<p><b>4. <\/b>Press <b>Cmd\/Ctrl+J <\/b>to copy the selection to a new layer. This is our mid ground.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5. <\/b>Create a new layer in between the background and mid ground. Fill it with white.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Your image should resemble the image below<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37065\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"505\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF2.jpg 505w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF2-189x300.jpg 189w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF2-100x158.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>03\/\/ ADDING DEPTH<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Choose the layer with our person and fill with black:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Filling with Foregound Color<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2022 Press D to reset colors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2022 Hold down Cmd+Shift+Del (mac)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ctrl+Shift+Backspace (win) to fill with foreground color while protecting transparency.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> We want the arch to go from foreground (black) to mid ground (gray).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A gradient is perfect for the task.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Choose the mid ground layer that we isolated in the previous step. Create a black to gray linear gradient.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Making a Custom Gradient:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2022 Choose the Gradient tool.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2022 Click on the gradient at the top left to open the gradient editor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2022 Click on the triangles at the bottom left and right and choose a color from the color picker that pops up.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Cmd\/Ctrl+Click <\/b>on the layer thumbnail to load the selection. You will see the marching ants.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Drag the gradient from the left to the opening of the arch as shown in step <b>(2)<\/b> on the left.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b> We also want to apply a gradient to the cars on the bottom right of the arch.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The problem is, if we apply the same gradient, it will replace the gradient we just made on the left.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The solution is to change the gradient to foreground to transparent. (This can be found at the top of the gradients under basics, its the second gradient preset).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Drag the gradient for the right to add a darker gradient to the cars. Your image should look like the one on the left.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37066\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF3.jpg 426w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF3-160x300.jpg 160w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF3-100x188.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now we are going to blend the ground into the background. There are a couple of things that are essential, so it doesn\u2019t look like our person is floating in the air.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First of all, the shade of gray on the ground must match the same shade at the feet. The second part is deciding where the ground blends off into the background. Add a guide so you can see where the gradient should end.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Press Cmd\/Ctrl to turn on Rulers. Drag from the ruler to create a guide.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h4><b>04\/\/<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>BLENDING THE GROUND PLANE<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>1. <\/b>Choose the White background layer<\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> Press the <b>D<\/b> key to reset the colors to Black and White.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Choose the gradient tool if it isn\u2019t still selected.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Start from the feet and drag up to the guide. You should see a gradient like the one shown here.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\/\/Next&#8211; Turning all the layers into a depth map \/\/<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37067\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF4.jpg 750w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF4-600x447.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF4-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF4-100x75.jpg 100w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF4-160x120.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>05\/\/ MAKING A DEPTH MAP<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Select the 3 layers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><i>(Click top desired layer, hold Shift and click bottom desired layer to select layers)<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Right-Click<\/b> and choose <i>Convert To Smart Object<\/i> This is a better option than merging, because we can go back and change the layers if we need to.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Press <b>Cmd\/Ctrl+A<\/b> to select all. Press <b>Cmd\/Ctrl+C<\/b> to copy the contents of the Smart Object layer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2. <\/b>Open the Channels Panel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Click the <b>+<\/b> to create a new Alpha channel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Press <b>Cmd\/Ctrl+V<\/b> to paste the depth map into the channel<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Return channel view to normal: Click on RGB <\/b>in the channels panel.<br \/>\nTurn the eye off in the alpha channel if it\u2019s still on.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37068\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"691\" height=\"663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF5.jpg 691w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF5-600x576.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF5-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/DOF5-100x96.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 691px) 100vw, 691px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>06\/\/ USING THE DEPTH MAP<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>This is where we use the depth map to create our blur.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Go to the layers panel and duplicate the background (for safe keeping) We are working on the new background layer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1.<\/b> Choose Filter&gt;Blur&gt;Lens Blur.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Under Depth Map Source; choose your Depth Map (alpha channel) Choose the one you made, <b>(alpha1)<\/b> or \u201c<b><i>premade<\/i><\/b>\u201d that<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I made for you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2.<\/b> There are two settings you will use. The first is Radius. Start with a setting of <b>24<\/b>. Now you should begin to see a nice background blur.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Click on Set Focus Point and try clicking on the person and then on the background.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Try on different places on the image.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t it amazing?
