You can craft images that otherwise cannot be accomplished. Many people shoot landscapes or architecture, which make fantastic backgrounds of a scene. But not everyone has access to models and fine garb. Therefore, using free stock images of models is a viable alternative. A good resource is e.g.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.deviantart.com<\/a>. Whenever using free stock images, you should mention the source and carefully read the terms of use. Also seek premission to use other people&#8217;s photographs if they don&#8217;t have a terms of service.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Since the model has typically been shot in a different environment than you used to photograph your background, one of the occurring problems is to match the color and light, which is essential to make the final composite believable. For more on my photo composites, also read my recent article that I wrote for Alien Skin Software:<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.alienskin.com\/exposure-for-photo-composites-with-frank-bramkamp\" target=\"_blank\">Exposure for Photo Composites<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">In the following, we will place a model into a landscape scenery. The model is supposed to walk across the field. The landscape is a typical view of German country side, where I live. This way we can darken the highlights more than the shadows. Best to use a\u00a0<em>Curves<\/em>\u00a0adjustment layer, so you can still modify it afterwards. In detail it is the texture\u00a0<em>Rice Paper<\/em>\u00a0from OnOneSoftware Perfect Effects. (You can also find free textures online by doing a search)<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">I kept some of its color to obtain a stained look. To match the texture, we also apply the same texture overlay to the model. Textures are often applied in a contrast blend mode, e.g.\u00a0<em>soft light<\/em>. Here a stronger effect is achieved using the\u00a0<em>vivid light<\/em>\u00a0blend mode at reduced opacity. One technique that I use all the time for color matching is to use the\u00a0<em>Average filter<\/em>\u00a0in Photoshop. This will produce a representative color for the background image.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><em><strong>Use the Average Filter to obtain a representative color of the background<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_average_color.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5554\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_average_color.jpg\" alt=\"MANUAL_average_color\" width=\"600\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_average_color.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_average_color-300x247.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"color: #566047;\"><\/h5>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\"><em>5.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Create a new layer filled with this color, set to the Color blend mode at a low opacity, allows a good matching. Since we only want to apply the color layer to the model, we use a clipping mask. To create the clipping mask, position the color layer above the woman layer. Hold down the alt\/Option key and move your cursor between the 2 layers, you will see an arrow appear. Click to apply.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"color: #566047;\"><em>Match the foreground color using the averaged background color<a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5560\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4.jpg\" alt=\"MANUAL_step_4\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4-90x90.jpg 90w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_step_4-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/h5>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">6<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">In the last step we want to account for the light that shines from the sky on the hair, and we also want pick up some of the light that is reflected from the ground onto the model and the dress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">To account for the variation of color and light of the background, duplicate the background layer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Move it above the woman layer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Choose Filter&gt;Blur&gt;Gausian Blur to blur the background layer until details vanish and we obtain a smooth variation of the color.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><em><strong>Blur the background<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_gaussian_blur.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5556\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_gaussian_blur.jpg\" alt=\"MANUAL_gaussian_blur\" width=\"600\" height=\"988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_gaussian_blur.jpg 600w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/MANUAL_gaussian_blur-182x300.jpg 182w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"color: #566047;\"><\/h5>\n<h3 style=\"color: #566047;\">7<\/h3>\n<p style=\"color: #566047;\">Next we project its colors on the model, by choosing the\u00a0<em>Soft light<\/em>\u00a0blend mode, at reduced opacity. Again, we use a clipping mask, to limit the effect onto the model. The hair gets a beautiful rim light and the skin as well as the dress take on the color of the surrounding.
