Most are fairly short, offering a good foundation for the reader on how certain effects are achieved but fail to take that extra step (or few steps) to make the piece really shine. Once you have an idea of how different techniques fit together in a piece, it is fairly easy to combine, say, the process to create metal and the process to create liquid to create something that exists in both sides of the FX map.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1287 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image01.jpg\" alt=\"image01\" width=\"273\" height=\"158\" \/><\/a>Create a new image with the following attributes:<\/p>\n<p>Width: 11 inches<br \/>\nHeight: 11 inches<br \/>\nResolution: 300 ppi, 8bit<br \/>\nBackground Color: White<br \/>\nColor Mode: RGB (Important or it won&#8217;r work)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 2<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1289 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image02.jpg\" alt=\"image02\" width=\"230\" height=\"242\" \/><\/a>Since the desired effect is to appear liquefied, a font that appears to have been made with a crayon or round brush will work perfectly. Select the Type tool and open the Character palette from the Options bar. The font I\u2019ve chosen is called \u2018WallowHmkBold\u2019\u2026 if you do not have this installed on your system just use the font of your choice. The attributes for the characters are seen below:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1290\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image03.jpg\" alt=\"image03\" width=\"274\" height=\"87\" \/><\/a>Note that the color is gray in the #666666 range and NOT stark black.<\/p>\n<p>Type a word across the face of the image.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1291\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image04.jpg\" alt=\"image04\" width=\"243\" height=\"81\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rasterize the type layer, then paint a few additional gray dots around the type.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1292\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image05.jpg\" alt=\"image05\" width=\"408\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image05.jpg 408w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image05-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 408px) 100vw, 408px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 5<\/h3>\n<p>Open the Channels palette and duplicate a channel\u2026 the Blue channel will work fine. Go to Image&gt;Adjustments&gt;Invert.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1293\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image06.jpg\" alt=\"image06\" width=\"294\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 6<\/h3>\n<p>Open the Filter menu and select Blur&gt;Gaussian Blur. First, blur the channel at a 25 pixel radius. Blur the channel again at a radius of 15 pixels.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1295\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image08.jpg\" alt=\"image08\" width=\"235\" height=\"77\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1294\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image07.jpg\" alt=\"image07\" width=\"328\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image07.jpg 328w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image07-295x300.jpg 295w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image07-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image07-90x90.jpg 90w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image07-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 328px) 100vw, 328px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 7<\/h3>\n<p>Turn on all the other layers (Click the eye to the left of RGB)<\/p>\n<p>Turn off the Blue copy channel, but don\u2019t delete it\u2026 you\u2019ll need it in a moment or two.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the letters RGB to make sure that th RGB channel is active.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1296\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image09.jpg\" alt=\"image09\" width=\"311\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image09.jpg 311w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image09-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 8<\/h3>\n<p>Go to Filter&gt;Render&gt;Lighting Effects. Set it up as outlined in the image below\u2026 be sure to select the Blue copy channel as the Texture Channel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1297\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image10.jpg\" alt=\"image10\" width=\"517\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image10.jpg 517w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image10-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you change the light angle and shape on the left by dragging the 4 dots<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 9<\/h3>\n<p>The result of all that is a pretty basic bevel, and yes, you could do pretty much the same thing with a layer style. Some habits die hard, however, and I like the end result better when channels come into play. What can I say? I\u2019ve been doing it this way since at least PS 6, and if it ain\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1298\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image11.jpg\" alt=\"image11\" width=\"427\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image11.jpg 427w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image11-300x152.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 427px) 100vw, 427px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 10<\/h3>\n<p>Duplicate the text layer and go to Filter&gt;Sketch&gt;Chrome. Set up the reflections as seen in the dialog box below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1299\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image12.jpg\" alt=\"image12\" width=\"484\" height=\"349\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image12.jpg 484w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image12-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 11<\/h3>\n<p>Now you can play with Layer Styles a bit. Open the Layer Styles dialog box and select Bevel\/Emboss. Enter the following settings\u2026 note that the Shadow color is again gray in the #666666 range and not black. Make sure the Gloss Contour is changed to cone.Once done click OK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image13.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1300\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image13.jpg\" alt=\"image13\" width=\"197\" height=\"246\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image14.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1301\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image14.jpg\" alt=\"image14\" width=\"351\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image14.jpg 351w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image14-300x143.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 12<\/h3>\n<p>Make a Curves adjustment layer and Levels adjustment layer with the settings seen here:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image15.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1302\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image15.jpg\" alt=\"image15\" width=\"171\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1303\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image16.jpg\" alt=\"image16\" width=\"237\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 13<\/h3>\n<p>Against a black background the shine really comes out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1304\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image17.jpg\" alt=\"image17\" width=\"361\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image17.jpg 361w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image17-300x146.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 361px) 100vw, 361px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 14<\/h3>\n<p>Turn off the background layer or layers (if you added the black separately) and merge all the others together.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image18.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1305\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image18.jpg\" alt=\"image18\" width=\"171\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Step 15<\/h3>\n<p>To give the type an enhanced liquid quality, go to Filter&gt;Liquify. Use the Bloat tool to expand or otherwise warp areas of the text as seen here. Once you are happy with the distortions, click OK.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image19.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1306\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image19.jpg\" alt=\"image19\" width=\"491\" height=\"246\" srcset=\"https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image19.jpg 491w, https:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image19-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Step 16<\/h3>\n<p>You can now throw the text into any image you so choose. In the following example, I\u2019ve blurred a tech-style background, placed the type in that document, then placed a duplicate of the blurred layer above the text. The Blend mode of the top layer is changed to Soft Light to serve as reflections off the type, or making the type appear transparent allowing you to see the background through it. I\u2019ll let you decide what is actually happening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1307\" src=\"http:\/\/photoshopcafe.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/image20.jpg\" alt=\"image20\" width=\"134\" height=\"142\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it for now.
